SoundCTRL

Best Practice

1. Always keep your Pocket PC charged when not in use. The PPC draws power even when it appears to be turned off. As a result, the PPC will deplete its battery power supply within a week of being removed from the charging cradle. This can result in loss of any data not saved to the PC or otherwise backed up. Always keep your PPC connected to its charging cradle when not in use.

2. Keep regular backups of the Pocket PC In addition to keeping the PPC charged it is important to regularly backup your data on the PPC Memory card and /or PC . This will ensure that, in the event your iPAQ should lose battery power, you will be able to immediately restore your SoundCTRL. You should make the first backup of the complete system after successfully registering the SoundCTRL system. To backup the PPC perform the following steps:

a. From the Main Pocket PC screen, select Start > Programs.

b. Select ‘Data Backup’ from the Programs screen.

c. Make sure that the Backup tab at the bottom of the screen is selected, and that the ‘Backup all data’ button is selected.

d. Tap the ellipsis (…) square next to the File input.

e. Choose a name for the backup, for example “SS101data20060723”.

f. Verify the Location and Folder to which the backup will be made. If you are saving the backup to Main Memory, it is important to make a copy of this backup file on your PC. In the event the PPC should lose power, any data stored in Main Memory on the PPC could be lost. Backing up to a Flash memory card is strongly recommended

g. Tap the Start button to begin the backup process.

h. After completing the backup, locate the file, and using ActiveSync, copy the file to a safe location on your PC. This process should be carried out periodically, or any time you make a significant change to your Pocket PC.
 3. Save time by making template files for frequently recorded equipment If you regularly take sample recordings from a particular pump, valve, or bearing, you can prevent having to enter in the equipment information every time you make a new sample. Simply open a previous sample from that piece of equipment, then tap the record icon. The currently loaded sample’s information will be loaded automatically into the Equipment and Comment fields. If you regularly record 10 pieces of equipment, make ‘dummy’ samples of each piece with the name of the equipment and the SoundScan 101 settings you plan to use listed in the comment fields. After saving each ‘dummy’ sample, copy the .wav files to a special folder called ‘Equipment’ and place them in your Pocket PC synchronization folder. This will make the basic equipment information available each time you go out to take samples, eliminating extra time spent re-entering equipment information.

4. Always copy new samples to the history folder After
taking a series of samples with SoundCTRL, always connect the Pocket PC to the cradle, allow it to completely synchronize, then copy the sample folders and their contents from the Synchronization folder (..\My Documents\Pocket PC My Documents) to your history folder (C:\SoundCTRL). Ensure the files are copied successfully by loading one or more into the PC version of SoundCTRL. Finally, delete the folders and all contents from the Synchronization folder. This will remove them from the Pocket PC and free up memory for your next set of samples.

5. Visit the Sonatest Online Community regularly at www.sonatest.com/Soundscan/ frequently for updates
to the SoundCTRL software, and other information that can help make your implementation of SoundCTRL a success.
