The Alphagage is an A-Scan verification corrosion gauge for use on difficult to measure corroded materials, which often give rise to spurious or erroneous readings when using conventional digital read out thickness meters.
Typical applications are offshore platforms, petro-chemical pipes and vessels, ship surveys and thick attenuative materials such as plastics, GRP and cast iron etc.
Designed with harsh environments in mind, the rugged case is sealed to IP 67 inhibiting moisture ingress from wet weather and high humidity conditions.
Ease of Use
The Alphagage has been designed with ease of use in mind, taking into account the ability of left or right handed operators to handle the menu system with just one thumb. Each menu is accessed by pressing MENU on the keypad. The UP and DOWN keys enable toggling between the menu topics and the + and - keys allow parameters to be changed. Once set up, thickness readings can be stored just by pressing OK.
Customisation
The Alphagage can also be customised by switching off any unwanted menus, or even all of the menus. So, if you don’t need the added complications associated with flexible measurement set-up and data storage, then you can hide them by pressing EDIT on the keypad and switch the menus on and off to suit. The Alphagage is as simple to use as a digital thickness meter with the additional benefit of manual gain control and A-scan display.
Calibration
The Alphagage can be calibrated using one of the following methods:
Built-in Calibration Block For instant automatic calibration for steel, simply place the probe on the built in calibration block, highlight the relevant calibration method and press OK. The instrument automatically defaults to a velocity of 5930 m/s, positions the echoes on the screen accordingly and calculates the probe zero.
Automatic Calibration For unknown velocity or material other than steel, select Auto-Cal and place the transducer on two reference samples of known thickness and enter the values. The Alphagage automatically calibrates and displays probe zero and material velocity.
Manual Calibration For materials whose velocity is known, simply key in the velocity and enter the probe zero value obtained from calibration using the built-in calibration block method.
Measurement Parameters
Full measurement set-ups are available to configure the ultrasonic parameters as with a digital flaw detector. Transducer settings can be optimised and stored in one of 10 probe memories.
Calibration settings can be stored and recalled from one of 100 panel settings. The operator has the choice to select between depth mode to measure to first echo, or echo-echo for through paint thickness. Convenience features include manual screen freeze, auto-freeze and the ability to capture the minimum thickness during a scan, with an audible alarm. |
