Bar and Tube Testing
Bar and tube manufacture supplies
to a variety of markets including aerospace, automotive,
defence, petro-chemical and power industries. At
Sonatest we can provide instrumentation to test
a wide range of geometries from thin walled specialist
tubing to large pipes for oil and gas transport.
The SFD range of instruments offers a high degree
of compatibility with existing automation equipment.
It incorporates the functionality to directly control
aspects of the production line with motor control,
switching of high current devices, interfacing to
PLC equipment etc.
Composites
The use of composite materials has increased dramatically
in a range of industries such as marine, aerospace,
wind energy, automotive and medical. Sonatest have
worked for several years with R&D departments in
a number of composite material suppliers as well
as manufacturers. With expertise in composite testing
and knowledge of material processes, Sonatest are
the ideal company to work with to provide comprehensive
solutions for the testing of composite components.
The RapidScan2 instrument has been optimised for
the detection, measurement and quantification of
a number of defects common to composites including
de-laminations, inclusions, porosity, bonding etc.
Forging Testing
The Forging process is used for manufacturing components
where the strength of the metal structure is critical.
The change in grain structure of the metal during
the forging process can increase the risk of defects
within the part. Relevant to the Automotive and
Aerospace industries and for safety critical parts,
it is vital that any defects are detected. Ultrasonic
inspection is an ideal safe non-destructive method
for flaw detection in forgings, resulting in enhanced
safety standards and a greater ability to rely on
the forged material.
Immersion Testing
Immersion testing is commonly used for testing small
to medium size composite and metallic structures.
The immersion technique offers the best possible
coupling conditions providing greatest sensitivity.
Large area C-Scanning can be performed by Sonatest
instruments. A powerful suit of evaluation tools
allows for defects to be identified, sized and annotated
for reporting. All of our instruments allow for
full A-Scan data to be captured during the scan
allowing scanned data to be evaluated and re-gated
off-line.
Multi-Channel Thickness
Measurements
Thickness measurements can be important for both
manufactured items and in service testing of components
subject to thinning or erosion. High sample rates
are important in ensuring high accuracy of thickness
readings and the SFD range of instruments offers
this together with advanced data processing to enable
accurate thickness measurements to be performed.
With a multi channel instrument, paint brush probes
may be used to scan large areas for thickness variations,
or alternatively many test locations may be continuously
monitored at once.
Weld Inspection
Ultrasonic flaw detectors are commonly commissioned
for weld inspection. The instruments can be used
to discover and identify problematic areas within
the weld in both production and in-service environments.
These areas include defects such as: crack formations,
inclusions, porosity, lack of weld fusion, incomplete
welds etc. Sonatest pride themselves in being able
to offer weld inspection tools designed to inspect
a large variety of materials and thicknesses. This
provides our customers with the ability to inspect
reliably, meet national standards and achieve individual
product specifications.
